Boston Advisory Board Backs Push for Dedicated City Bus Stop Manager

BOSTON -- October 30, 2024, Boston's Disability Commission Advisory Board heard a call for a new full-time city bus stop manager as research showed 85 percent of the city's nearly 2,000 bus stops lack shelters. Matt Moran of the Boston Transportation Department and Northeastern co-op Lee Anderson presented findings from more than 25 stakeholder interviews and five working group sessions, concluding that fragmented, agency-by-agency management leaves riders, especially those with disabilities, without safe, accessible, or dignified waiting conditions. The team's goal is to secure funding for the bus stop manager position by 2025. Boston Public Schools Transportation's Dan Rosengard separately reported that October morning on-time performance reached 90 percent under the new Zoom technology system, up from 88 percent in the same month last year, and that the number of students with disabilities missing a required bus monitor has been cut from 165 to 63 per morning compared to the prior school year. The board's sole formal vote was unanimous approval of its previous meeting minutes.
