Boston City Council Committee Hears Plan for $38 Million in Community Preservation Grants

BOSTON — April 1, 2025 — Boston's City Council Community Preservation Act committee heard a $38.1 million grant package Tuesday covering 52 recommended projects citywide. Councillor Enrique J. Pepén chaired the April 1 hearing, joined by Councillors Edward M. Flynn, Erin J. Murphy, and Council President Ruthzee Louijeune. Thadine Brown, director of the Community Preservation Office, told the panel that 82 applications requesting a combined $54 million were submitted, with 44 of the 52 recommended projects slated for full funding. The proposed split is 50 percent to affordable housing, 25 percent to historic preservation, and 25 percent to open space and recreation. Council President Louijeune noted that 65 percent of recommended projects are in low- or moderate-income neighborhoods. If the full City Council approves the appropriation, Boston's cumulative CPA awards since 2016 will exceed $230 million across 397 projects.
