Boston City Council Grills Library Officials on Equity, Branch Closures, and Capital Needs

BOSTON -- April 24, 2024, Boston City Council committee examines public library equity, capital gaps, and staff harassment concerns. The Committee on City Services and Innovation Technology, chaired by District 5 Councillor Enrique J. Pepén, held an April 24 hearing on Docket 0505-13, sponsored by District 8 Councillor Erin J. Murphy, to review Boston Public Library services citywide. Members raised a range of concerns including the shuttered South End branch, flooding-related closure of which District 2 Councillor Edward M. Flynn called years overdue for resolution, and a $17 million Fenway branch commitment from developer Samuels and Associates tied to a project at 1400 Boylston Street, flagged by District 1 Councillor Gabriela Coletta Zapata. Council President Ruthzee Louijeune warned that librarians face "heightened stress" from harassment and unresolved legal questions around managing a limited public forum. No votes were taken.
