Boston City Council Presses City Hall on White Stadium Cost Surge, Madison Park Delays

BOSTON -- January 22, 2025, Boston City Council scrutinizes $91 million White Stadium deal and stalled Madison Park rebuild in accountability hearing. At-large Councilor Julia M. Mejia chaired a January 22 session of the Committee on Post-Audit Government Accountability, Transparency, and Accessibility, examining how the city's share of the White Stadium renovation rose from an initial $51 million to a current $91 million estimate with no guarantee of finality. Andrew Zimbalist, Professor Emeritus of Economics at Smith College, testified remotely that the city's projected annual revenue from the deal, capped at roughly $800,000 from a $400,000 rent payment plus revenue shares, would cover only about one-fifteenth of yearly debt service on a $100 million bond. Boston Teachers Union President Eric Burge urged the council to accelerate the Madison Park rebuild, noting 74 of 124 BPS buildings predate 1940 and the school is the city's sole career and technical education institution. Multiple in-person speakers called on the council to consider the Emerald Necklace Conservancy's lower-cost alternative for White Stadium, with one resident citing NWSL rules that would bar BPS football teams from the renovated venue during the professional season.
