Boston council approves $5.85 million for school building repairs, design work

Boston council funds $5.85 million in school repairs, files dueling police accountability bills. The council voted 10-0 to advance $5 million for a feasibility study at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School and $850,000 for design work at five other schools, part of a pipeline Ways and Means Chair Benjamin J. Weber said represents nearly $696 million in construction investment citywide.
Councilors also approved $810,000 for a Chinatown plaza redesign honoring planner Tunney Lee and $251,708 to study an 18th-century Charlestown pottery site tied to two enslaved workers, Jack and Acton. Councilor Brian Worrell filed an ordinance requiring faster release of body-camera footage, saying "accountability is public safety," while Councilor Miniard Culpepper filed a companion measure targeting internal investigation timelines. Councilor John FitzGerald introduced an ordinance banning synthetic kratom sales, and the council honored Sergeant Detective Eddie Crispin on his retirement after 27 years with the Boston Police Department.
