Boston council committee hears case for 500-yard police buffer with Dedham

BOSTON — November 6, 2025 — Boston's City Council public safety committee hears testimony backing expanded police cooperation with Dedham. The Committee on Public Safety and Criminal Justice, chaired by at-large Councilor Henry Santana, held a hearing November 6 on Docket 0978, a local adoption order for Chapter 270 of the Acts of 2024, which would give officers from both Boston and Dedham full police authority up to 500 yards across the municipal boundary — matching arrangements already in place with Brookline and Newton for decades. Boston Police Superintendent Robert Ciccolo Jr. presented aerial photographs showing the municipal line bisecting large industrial buildings, including the former Stop and Shop warehouse on Meadow Bank Road and a nearly half-mile-long former warehouse near the Boston Pickle Club, forcing Dedham units to route emergency responses through Canton and up the Neponset Valley Parkway. State Representative Rob Consalvo, who has filed versions of the legislation since the mid-2000s, urged the committee to issue a favorable report "as soon as possible" so the full council can vote and send it to the mayor for signature.
