Boston Council Examines City Oversight of Subsidized Homeownership Programs

BOSTON -- October 9, 2025, Boston City Council opens inquiry into oversight gaps in city-supported homeownership programs. The Committee on Housing and Community Development held a hearing Thursday on Docket No. 1440, a measure filed by Councillors Julia M. Mejia, Brian Worrell, and Erin J. Murphy, chaired by District 9 Councillor Liz Breadon. Mejia cited constituent complaints about unexpected building assessments, co-op units where residents bear ownership costs but cannot build equity, and construction defects surfacing years after purchase in deed-restricted and mixed-income developments.
