Boston Council Hearing Exposes Community Anger Over White Stadium, Madison Park Decisions

BOSTON -- January 22, 2025, A nearly 12-hour Boston City Council committee hearing on January 22 laid bare widespread community anger over the engagement process for both the White Stadium redevelopment and the Madison Park Vocational Technical High School renovation. Councilor Julia M. Mejia, chair of the Committee on Post-Audit, Government Accountability, Transparency, and Accessibility, convened the session under Docket 0176 alongside co-sponsors and Councilors Edward M. Flynn, Erin J. Murphy, Benjamin J. Weber, Henry Santana, and John FitzGerald. Speaker after speaker challenged the quality of public input into the city's roughly $100 million lease agreement with Boston Unity Soccer Partners, with one panelist, Franklin Park Coalition founding member Lewis Griggs, telling councilors the project's Implementation Advisory Group "was never allowed to meet as a group together." On Madison Park, C-PLAN executive director Ivelisse Caraballo demanded the city move forward with construction with or without a pending Massachusetts School Building Authority application, warning that a failed MSBA bid would force the process to restart after more than two years of work. Flynn said it was "kind of disappointing" that more council colleagues had not attended a hearing he called one of the most significant in years. No votes were taken.
