BOSTON — June 26, 2025 — Boston City Council committee hears sharp debate over proposed LGBTQIA2S+ oversight commission, with no vote taken. The Committee on Government Operations, chaired by Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata, held a June 26 public hearing on Docket 0969, sponsored by Councilors Julia M. Mejia, Henry Santana, and Liz Breadon, which would create a formal oversight commission and mandate a quality-of-life study for LGBTQIA2S+ residents. The Wu administration's Mayor's Office of LGBTQIA2S+ Advancement — which has directed $125,000 in legal aid grants and serves a partner network of more than 100 organizations — countered with a Partner Advisory Council model, arguing a formal commission would require full-time staffing the city cannot currently add. Mejia, noting the administration's counterproposal arrived less than 48 hours before the hearing, declared the coalition is "more interested in making sure that we get this right than they are to do it fast in a hurry."
