Boston council panel advances $40.7 million Community Preservation package covering 56 projects

BOSTON — April 6, 2023 — Boston City Council's Community Preservation committee clears $40.7 million for 56 city projects. Committee Chair Michael Flaherty advanced Docket 0574 on April 6, directing just under $20.5 million to 10 affordable housing projects creating 424 total units, roughly $10.2 million to 27 historic preservation projects, and the remainder to 19 open space and recreation initiatives. Chief of Housing Sheila Dillon called the housing slate leveraged with city, state, and federal resources; highlights include a $3 million award for 44 homeownership units at a new Chinatown development that will also house a long-sought branch library, and $2.5 million each for senior housing at Mattapan State Hospital and a South Boston convent conversion. Community Preservation Office Director Thadine Brown told the committee that since the program's 2018 launch, Boston will have awarded more than $157 million to nearly 300 projects across all 23 neighborhoods. Flaherty committed to a full council vote on April 12.
