BOSTON — December 9, 2024 — Boston's planning committee clears 16 appointment dockets for a year-end council vote, including a Charlestown historic district study committee that drew public opposition. Chair Sharon Durkan's Committee on Planning, Development, and Transportation heard testimony December 9 from nominees to the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Zoning Commission, and a new study committee that would prepare the report for a potential Monument Square Architectural Conservation District — the first such designation process in Boston in years. Reappointees Hansi Vedder-Baranza to the ZBA and Michael Nichols, current Zoning Commission chair, drew uniform praise from attending councilors Flynn, Murphy, and Weber; former Parks Commissioner Brian Woods was approved to join the Zoning Commission. Two Charlestown residents, Diana Vallee and Joanna Hines, testified against the Monument Square dockets, citing inadequate public notice, and asked for a postponement until the new year; Boston Landmarks Commission staff member Joe Cornish countered that all study committee meetings would be open to the public and that the full designation process — including a city council vote — remains years away. Durkan said she plans to advance all confirmed dockets at the council's final 2024 meeting on December 11, citing the risk that unacted dockets fall off the agenda at year's end.
