Boston Public Facilities Commission Awards $3 Million BPS Facility Study Contract

BOSTON — July 21, 2026 — Boston's Public Facilities Commission approved a $2,999,910 contract Monday for a 16-month study of the Boston Public Schools building portfolio, along with a $455,495 amendment to a South Boston community center renovation. Pedro Hernandez, project manager with the Public Facilities Department, presented the award to DLR Group Inc., which beat out SMMA after a two-round solicitation that drew qualifications from only two firms. The BPS study will establish educational and architectural standards and produce a master plan with 12 case studies, potentially covering a 20-to-25-year capital expenditures horizon; the $2,999,910 ceiling includes $300,000 in additional services. A scrivener's error listing the contract duration as 16 weeks rather than 16 months will be corrected by affidavit. On the Curly Community Center renovation at 1663 Columbia Road, Senior Project Manager Scott Dupree cited unforeseen deteriorated structural steel and hazardous material abatement as drivers of the second contract amendment with Design Lab Architects Inc., with construction targeted for late summer 2022.
