BPS Superintendent Finalist Mary Skipper Faces Family Panel on Equity and Student Achievement

BOSTON — Somerville schools chief Mary Skipper faced a 90-minute public panel of Boston Public Schools students, families, and community advocates as one of two finalists in the BPS superintendent search. The school committee's search committee began with 34 candidates, narrowed the field to eight through May and June, and voted June 16 to advance finalists; two candidates subsequently withdrew, leaving Skipper and Dr. Tommy Welch, BPS region one school superintendent, as the final two.

Panelists pressed Skipper on dropout re-engagement, school closures, special education transition programs, and multilingual family access — with parent Tanya Nixon-Silberg challenging her directly on responsiveness to Black women and women of color after two women of color withdrew from the search. When panelist Suhey Scannell, an English learner mother, asked whether Skipper speaks more than one language, Skipper said she does not: "That is my deficit." Skipper said she has lived in Dorchester for 25 years and called the opportunity to lead BPS "coming home in my educational career."
