City Council · Meeting of September 10, 2026

Boston council panel hears summer gun data as Flynn presses for a police-staffing commission. The Committee on Public Safety and Criminal Justice took up five hearing orders at once, with Councilor Miniard Culpepper citing 819 firearms recovered by Boston police in 2025 and saying districts B2 and B3 accounted for 90 percent of them. BRIC director Ryan Walsh reported gunfire incidents down 24 percent year to date and a record-low 79 gunfire incidents this summer, even as summer shooting victims rose to 57 from 46.

Councilor Edward M. Flynn said rank-and-file officers routinely work 16-hour shifts, calling it "unsustainable" and "unfair," and proposed a citywide commission to study police staffing; department officials said such overtime is voluntary. Isaac Yablo of the Office of Violence Prevention said the office's youth-intervention program has grown from three to eight neighborhoods. No formal votes were taken.
