Fenway Panthers Defeat Maimonides 58-44, Advance to Sectional Finals

BOSTON — Fenway Panthers defeat Maimonides MCATs 58-44 to reach the Girls North Division IV sectional finals. Sophomore Kayana Armbrister was named MVP with 15 points and a career-high 21 rebounds, while senior Janiyah Gulley added 20 points and 19 rebounds — the two post players combining for 40 rebounds against a Maimonides squad with limited interior size. Maimonides senior captain Danielle Bessler nearly willed her team to an upset, posting 22 points and nine rebounds by halftime and driving the MCATs to a 30-25 lead, but her fourth personal foul late in the third quarter sent her to the bench and triggered a 15-0 Fenway run to open the fourth quarter.

"We just made sure we didn't want to give up," Armbrister said. "You can't give up. You came too far for it." Fenway head coach John Rice, whose team has now made four consecutive sectional final appearances, called Bessler and Tova Gelb a "Steph Curry, Klay Thompson type backcourt" — Bessler finished with 27 points; Gelb added 13.
