Urban College of Boston Joins City's Tuition-Free Community College Program as Sixth Partner

Boston adds Urban College of Boston to its tuition-free community college program, bringing the total to six partner institutions. Mayor Martin Walsh made the announcement Tuesday at The Base, a youth and sports education center in Roxbury where Urban College has offered on-site classes since fall 2016, saying close to 500 students have already enrolled in the program citywide since its launch with Bunker Hill Community College and Roxbury Community College. The program is funded through the city's development linkage fees on commercial construction.

Urban College President Michael Taylor cited a 100 percent continuation rate among the 17 students enrolled in the full-time Base program last fall — 13 continued their studies, three transferred to four-year colleges, and one entered a job training program. State Representative Chyna Tyler, the 7th Suffolk District, attended as sponsor of a Statehouse bill that would extend a similar program statewide, with Representative Liz Miranda as a co-sponsor; Walsh said the bill remains in committee.
