BOSTON — ABCD opens renovated Roxbury Head Start facility after four-year, multilateral capital effort. Action for Boston Community Development held a grand opening Tuesday for its Seventh Street Head Start site in Roxbury, a 1929 building previously operating as the Rosa Parks Daycare Center and leased from the George Robert White Fund for one dollar per year over 25 years. Mayor Marty Walsh attended alongside state Department of Early Education and Care Commissioner Sam and Federal Office of Head Start Regional Program Manager Marina Winkler, who disclosed that ABCD was one of 74 organizations nationally — and one of only two in New England — to receive a competitive early Head Start childcare partnership grant out of hundreds of applications.

Funding came from the White Fund, the state's EEOST capital program, the federal Office of Head Start, the Children's Investment Fund, and the Timothy Smith Foundation, which paid for a new computer lab. The facility now houses three infant-and-toddler classrooms and two preschool classrooms serving children from age two months through five years, with ABCD President and CEO John Drew noting the organization now operates 137 Head Start classrooms across Boston.
