Boston Announces Open Streets Events on Three Neighborhood Corridors This Summer

Boston launches a three-event Open Streets series closing up to two miles of neighborhood roadway to cars. The city announced the program July 19, with Chief of Streets Yasha Franklin Hodge and Chief of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Shugun Itawu among the officials present. The first event runs Sunday, July 10, on Center Street in Jamaica Plain from Jackson Square to the Monument; the second is Saturday, August 6, on Blue Hill Avenue from Dudley Street to Warren Avenue; the third is Saturday, September 24, on Dorchester Avenue from Freeport Street to Gallivan Boulevard, covering two full miles.

Streets will close to vehicle traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on each date. Small business district leaders Annie Leif of Fields Corner and the Little Saigon Cultural District, Ed Gaskin of Greater Grove Hall Main Streets, and Warren Williams of Three Squares Main Street participated in the announcement alongside Shana Bryant Consulting, the Black- and women-owned firm retained to plan the events. A pre-existing initiative, Open Newberry, will also expand this year with dates to be announced.
