Boston announces permanent bus lanes, bike infrastructure, and outdoor dining extension amid COVID-19 update. The mayor announced this fall the city will install permanent bus lanes on Columbus Avenue in Roxbury, North Washington Street serving up to 12,000 daily commuters, and Washington Street in Roslindale serving roughly 19,000 daily riders, while converting pop-up bike lanes around Boston Common, Tremont Street, and Boylston Street into permanent separated infrastructure. Outdoor dining on public streets and sidewalks is extended to December 1, with propane heater application fees waived; restaurants on private space may continue for the duration of the public health emergency.

The city's Small Business Relief Fund has awarded $6.7 million to 1,700 businesses and the Reopen Boston Fund has distributed $2.1 million to more than 1,200 businesses. Boston's seven-day COVID positive test rate stood at 1.6 percent for the week of September 7, down from 1.7 percent; East Boston's rate was 6.4 percent, down from 11.4 percent three weeks prior. A final community listening session on the Boston Police Reform Task Force's draft recommendations is set for September 22 at 4 p.m., with written comments due September 25.
