Boston Breaks Ground on First New Firehouse Built in 30 Years

Uncategorized 2026-07-22 clip6472 · Meeting of July 22, 2026

Boston celebrates topping-off of first new firehouse in over 30 years, a $23.5 million Roxbury facility for Engine 42. Mayor Martin Walsh, Fire Commissioner John Dempsey, and retired Commissioner Joe Finn marked the beam-raising Tuesday, with Walsh calling the project "a $23.5 million investment in Roxbury that will provide positive implications on the entire city." The new two-story, 23,000-square-foot building replaces a 68-year-old, 10,600-square-foot single-story station and is designed to reduce firefighter exposure to occupational carcinogens through physical separation of gear storage and living quarters, positive-pressure airflow, and on-site gear-cleaning facilities. The structure targets LEED Silver certification and will include a public artwork funded through the city's Percentage for the Arts program.

Finn, who was celebrating his birthday at the ceremony, credited Walsh's "undying support" after nearly a decade of negotiations over the project's cost. Projected opening is September 2027, with Commissioner Dempsey expressing hope for an earlier date.
