Boston City Council unanimously swears in Erin Murphy to fill at-large vacancy

BOSTON -- July 22, 2026, Boston City Council seats Erin Murphy as at-large councilor in unanimous 13-0 vote. The council voted Tuesday to fill a vacant at-large seat using Board of Election Commissioners certification of the November 5, 2019 election, with all 13 members voting in favor on Dockets 1211 and 1212. Mayor Michelle Wu, appearing in the council chamber for the first time in her mayoral capacity, on her 15th day in office, administered the three-part oath of office to Murphy, praising the new councilor's record on the opioid crisis, affordable housing, and education. Council President Kim Janey, welcoming Wu, said she was "extremely proud, from one woman to another woman, to pass the baton." Murphy's mother, Mrs. Walsh, was present in the chamber.
