Mejia, as panelists warned that the October 15 military pay date could go unmet for National Guard troops and active-duty service members. Commissioner of Veterans Services Robert Santiago said the city has activated a shutdown playbook anchored by the bridge-to-gap program and potential expedited access to Chapter 115 state benefits, while VA medical centers, PTSD counseling, and the Veterans Crisis Hotline (988, press 1) remain unaffected. State Senator Lydia Edwards, an active Army National Guard officer and former city councilor, proposed that Boston adopt a local option under the HERO Act to reserve 10 percent of its affordable housing for veterans and create a city-level veteran equity review board for wrongfully discharged service members.
