Boston Mayor Wu Touts 93 Percent Senior Vaccination Rate at Age Strong Summer Celebration

BOSTON — July 22, 2026 — Boston's Age Strong Commission hosted a Joy of Summer celebration for seniors at the Lawn on D on July 22, drawing Mayor Jane Wu and a full slate of outdoor programming including lawn games, live animal demonstrations, music, and a Boston Police Department ice cream truck. Wu reported that 93 percent of Boston residents aged 65 and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and that 68 percent of the city's total population has been vaccinated. The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority hosted the event, with representatives David Gibbons and Bob O'Shea recognized from the stage, and Rebel Kitchen's Dave Doyle providing food. Wu credited Age Strong Commission Commissioner O'Shea with maintaining neighborhood programming throughout 18 months of pandemic isolation, citing senior cruises, bingo, and community events as examples, and called on seniors to encourage younger family members to get vaccinated.
