Boston opens two outdoor pools, launches mobile COVID testing program

Uncategorized 2026-07-22 clip6464 · Meeting of July 22, 2026

Boston opens two free outdoor pools and launches a mobile COVID-19 testing team as the city's positive test rate drops to 2.1 percent. The mayor announced Tuesday that the Clougherty Pool in Charlestown and the Mirabella Pool in the North End will open July 23 under a reservation-only system capped at 40 percent capacity, roughly 75 people per session, with free 90-minute slots bookable at boston.gov/bcyf/summer. A new mobile testing team, operated with East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, launches the same day at the Jackson Mann Community Center in Allston and will rotate to a new neighborhood every two weeks for three months.

The mayor also signed a joint letter with six peer mayors — including the mayors of Portland, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. — demanding that the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security withdraw federal law enforcement personnel from American cities, saying such deployments are "not welcome here in the City of Boston." He separately reported that a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old were killed and an 18-year-old critically wounded in separate gun violence incidents over the weekend.
