Boston rededicates South Boston hero square for Navy veteran Martin Francis McDonough, killed in 1942. Mayor Martin Walsh and City Councilor Eddie Flynn, who chairs the Boston City Council's Veterans Committee, gathered at the McDonough Post in South Boston on July 22 to unveil a biographical plaque and QR code as part of the city's citywide hero square rededication initiative, which Walsh said now covers more than 1,700 squares. The program, run through Veterans Services Commissioner Santiago's office, attaches plaques linking smartphone users to fuller histories of each veteran named.

Walsh noted that the squares had over time "become invisible" as names were absorbed into street hardware. Commander Susan McDonough of the Post presented a flag flown over the USS Constitution on November 13, 2019 — the 77th anniversary of the torpedoing of McDonough's ship, the USS Juneau — signed by the ship's 75th commander, Nathan Schnick.
