Boston Secures $2.2 Million Federal Earmark for Moakley Park Flood Protection

Uncategorized · Meeting of July 19, 2026

Boston officials announce $2.2 million federal earmark to advance climate resilience at Moakley Park. Mayor Michelle Wu, U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, and Congressman Stephen Lynch gathered at the South Boston waterfront park July 19 to celebrate the funding, which includes roughly $1.65 million in congressionally directed spending secured by the three federal lawmakers.

The park sits at what officials called a "critical breach point" in the existing seawall where a 40-inch storm surge could affect more than 35,000 people and send floodwater as far as Roxbury. The money will advance the Resilient Moakley Park Connectors Project to final design under the city's Climate Ready Boston program — but officials acknowledged the full park redesign, which would connect to the adjacent Accordia private development at Columbia Point, carries an estimated price tag of $250 million with no committed funding source. Carol Sullivan, Executive Director of the Mary Ellen McCormick Tenant Task Force, said the 1,016-unit public housing complex across from the park — now being redeveloped with Winn Development — is already in a flood zone, and that a prior storm surge forced tenants to plug drains for weeks while basements dried out.
