MBTA Unveils Draft Bus Network Redesign Aimed at Equity and Frequency Gains

BOSTON — July 27, 2022 — The MBTA presented its draft Bus Network Redesign proposal during a July 27 Boston community access TV airing, outlining plans to overhaul the city's bus system with a focus on equity and frequency. An agency official, whose name was not captured in the broadcast, said the redesign builds on the Better Bus Project and is being coordinated with efforts to add dedicated bus lanes, modernize bus facilities, and make all stops accessible. The proposed draft map would deliver a 70 percent increase in weekend service system-wide, double the number of high-frequency routes, and bring 200,000 more residents into frequent-service range of the Longwood Medical Area. The agency said it is collecting public comment on the draft before publishing a final map for implementation, with particular attention to transfer requirements, stop accessibility, and proximity to health care and senior housing.
