State Budget Includes $50,000 for East Boston's Eastie Farm as Geothermal Greenhouse Planned

BOSTON — July 22, 2026 — Boston's Eastie Farm celebrates a decade of urban agriculture and announces a state budget award and a geothermal greenhouse project. Mayor Michelle Wu and City Councilor Lydia Edwards joined Eastie Farm Director Kanan and community members July 22 at the East Boston urban farm, which began in 2015 on a city-conveyed lot. Legislative aide Jessica Martinez announced that Representative Adrian Moran secured $50,000 for Eastie Farm in the recently passed state budget. Senator Joe Boncore's chief of staff Maggie Randall said Moran and Boncore filed legislation this session for a statewide community agriculture program modeled on the farm. Kanan disclosed that Eastie Farm is planning a geothermal greenhouse on a second city-conveyed parcel at 6th Chelsea Terrace, adjacent to a new Paris Street school, but acknowledged the state-funded project is already over budget and behind schedule, with a bridge-funding request to the city and state forthcoming.
