BOSTON — Mayor Walsh reports Boston COVID cases have doubled in a week, opens 1,000-bed overflow hospital. At a Monday briefing, Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced that Boston had recorded 3,916 confirmed coronavirus cases and 58 deaths as of April 12, with 52 percent of all cases arriving in a single seven-day window.

The city opened Boston Hope Medical Center at the Boston Convention Center — a 1,000-bed facility built in five days — which had 45 patients by Sunday evening. Walsh flatly rejected federal talk of reopening the economy after May 1, calling it "completely irresponsible," and said models place the surge peak closer to the end of April. A new health equity task force held its first meeting over the weekend, and Whittier Street Health Center in Roxbury began offering rapid-results testing the same day.

The Boston Resiliency Fund has raised more than $24.4 million from over 3,500 donors and distributed $10.4 million to 38 organizations, while a lottery was held Monday for more than 5,500 qualifying applicants in the first round of the city's rental relief fund.
