Boston Mayor Walsh signs executive order requiring carbon neutrality in all new municipal buildings. Mayor Martin J. Walsh signed the order at a public ceremony July 22, directing that new city-owned schools, libraries, fire stations, and other facilities be designed to high energy efficiency standards, optimize on-site renewable energy, and prioritize fossil-fuel-free combustion.
Public Facilities Department Director Tricia Lyons, who will lead implementation, noted that city-owned buildings account for nearly three-quarters of Boston's municipal carbon emissions. City Councilor Matt O'Malley credited the Boston Clean Energy Coalition with driving the policy and cited the net-zero Hastings Elementary School in Lexington — which generates a surplus 250,000 kilowatt hours annually — as a fiscal model. Walsh signaled the city will issue a carbon performance standard for new private buildings "in the coming years" and said Boston's 2050 carbon-neutrality target may be revisited as momentum builds.
