Boston Announces $2.2 Million to Harden Moakley Park Against Flooding

BOSTON -- July 20, 2022, Boston officials announce $2.2 million to climate-proof Moakley Park in South Boston. Mayor Michelle Wu was joined Wednesday by U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey and Congressman Stephen Lynch at Moakley Park to celebrate the funding, which includes $1.65 million secured by the federal delegation through a congressional local-priority spending process championed by Lynch. Warren called the park "a critical breach point" where a 40-inch storm surge would affect more than 35,000 people and endanger 1,700 low-income families in the adjacent Mary Ellen McCormick and Ann Lynch Homes at Old Colony, developments representing close to $750 million in combined government investment. The Resilient Moakley Park Connectors Project, part of the city's Climate Ready Boston program, will now advance to final design, the first Boston climate-resilience project to involve city-state collaboration from the outset. Markey placed the investment within nearly $140 million in total federal spending the Massachusetts delegation has delivered to the Commonwealth for climate resilience.
