Boston City Council Sworn In on New Year's Day at Faneuil Hall

BOSTON — January 1, 2024 — Boston's full 13-member City Council was sworn in New Year's Day at Faneuil Hall, opening the 2024-2025 term. Mayor Michelle Wu administered the oath of office to all 13 members, including four councilors-at-large — Ruthzee Louijeune, Erin J. Murphy, Julia M. Mejia, and Henry Santana — and nine district councilors, certified by City Clerk Alex Juntes reading the official election certificate from Elections Chair Anita Tavares. New members include Sharon Durkan, John FitzGerald, Enrique J. Pepén, Henry Santana, and Benjamin J. Weber. Wu praised outgoing Council President Edward M. Flynn for his leadership, noted that Councilor Mejia's birthday fell on the inauguration date, and drew a connection between the proceedings and Haitian Independence Day, telling the crowd that the councilors' presence "is revolutionary."
