Boston PIC Advances MGH North Anderson Street Discontinuance, Approves Nine Petitions

Boston's Public Improvement Commission approved nine public-way petitions and advanced Massachusetts General Hospital's two-tower campus expansion toward a formal public hearing at its April 28, 2022 meeting. Nick Heaney of MGH and Howard Mosher of VHB presented a package requiring the permanent discontinuance of North Anderson Street, a two-story overhead bridge over Parkman Street, a subsurface service tunnel, and extensive streetscape improvements on four downtown streets, with the first of two patient towers targeted for occupancy in late 2026 and the second in 2030. Councilor Kenzie Bach testified in support while pressing for accelerated action at the Cambridge Street and North Grove Street intersection, noting a $250,000 mitigation contribution for a left-turn signal and citing a combined $6 million committed to the long-delayed Blossom Street rebuild.

West End Civic Association members Rob Whitney and Louise Thomas raised unresolved concerns about traffic flow and the removal of the North Grove taxi stand, which Heaney said MGH must now relocate as a priority. The MGH petitions and a BPDA housekeeping transfer of 356 square feet of Union Street Park to the public right-of-way were both continued to May 12, 2022.
