Boston officials unveil $2.2 million for Moakley Park flood protection tied to public housing redevelopment. Mayor Michelle Wu joined Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey and Rep.
Stephen Lynch, who said the delegation secured about $1.65 million of the total and called the project part of nearly $140 million in federal spending brought to the state. Officials said a 40-inch storm surge would affect more than 35,000 residents, including at the Mary Ellen McCormick and Old Colony public housing developments, where close to three-quarters of a billion dollars has already been invested. Carol Sullivan, executive director of the Mary Ellen McCormick Tenant Task Force, said past flooding "caused many units to be infested with little flies" and detailed a redevelopment of the 1,016-unit complex with passive-house standards.
A larger, roughly $250 million park redesign remains unfunded.
