Boston School Committee interviews finalist Mary Skipper for superintendent. Somerville Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper, a former Boston Public Schools principal at Tech Boston Academy, fielded roughly two hours of questions from Chair Jerry Robinson and committee members on achievement gaps, bilingual education and special education reform. Skipper said Somerville cut out-of-district special education placements from about 120 students to roughly 70 and used federal ESSER relief funds to hire social workers and counselors at a ratio of one to 125 students, drawing on Boston's roughly $100 million in added base-budget funding under three mayoral administrations.
"It can't be like a definition of convenience," Skipper said of applying equity policy consistently. The committee, which narrowed an original field of 34 candidates to Skipper and BPS Region 1 Superintendent Dr. Tommy Welch, plans a final vote on June 29 at 5 p.m.
Members unanimously approved a motion to adjourn the interview.
