Boston PIC Approves Frederick Douglass Plaza, Multiple Dorchester Development Projects

BOSTON — June 12, 2025 — Boston's Public Improvement Commission approved a Frederick Douglass memorial plaza and a wave of development-related street improvements at its June 12 hearing. Chair Yasha Franklin Hodge led the commission through unanimous approvals of specific repairs along Tremont, Cabot, Hammond, and Benton streets in Lower Roxbury for the community-led Frederick Douglass Plaza project, which will include a memorial sculpture maintained by the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture. The commission also approved the discontinuance of a Brighton street segment valued at $60,000 in an appraisal, and conditionally approved sidewalk and street tree work in front of an 18-unit, 80-to-100-percent AMI condominium project on Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester. A Verizon pole relocation in Roxbury was continued to June 26 after property owner Minyard Culpepper testified the pole, placed on his land without an easement decades ago, is leaning and has cables resting on his fence — "Verizon hasn't been a good neighbor," he told the commission.
