Wu names nine to civilian police review board, five to oversight panel

Boston seats two new police oversight boards, six years after task force recommended them. Mayor Michelle Wu appointed nine members to a Civilian Review Board, chaired by Peter Alvarez, and five to an Internal Affairs Oversight Panel, chaired by Judge Leslie Harris, completing the buildout of the Office of Police Accountability and Transparency the City Council codified in December 2020. OPAT Executive Director Stephanie Everett, nine months into the role, said her staff has grown from one person to eight and told the new appointees "it will require some of us to get comfortable with being uncomfortable." Wu said OPAT's public complaint and data dashboard is now live at boston.gov/OPAT, and tied the appointments to the city's ongoing police commissioner search, which has drawn two listening sessions and a survey offered in 11 languages.
Councilor Ricardo Arroyo called it "a great day for the City of Boston."
