Boston Fire Training Academy Renamed for Captain Leo T. Sullivan After 39-Year Career

BOSTON — December 18, 2024 — Boston's Public Facilities Commission unanimously renamed the city's fire training facility in Quincy and approved a $34,000 Mattapan land sale at its December 18 meeting. The Boston Fire Training Academy at One Moon Island Road, previously called the Chief John A. Martin Fire Academy, will now bear the name of Captain Leo T. Sullivan, a Boston firefighter from 1957 to 1996 who spent his final six active-duty years as a training captain at the facility and continued working there in retirement until his death earlier this year. Fire Commissioner and Chief of Department Paul Berg, who championed the renaming, told commissioners Sullivan "put thousands of firefighters onto this job" and "had a high standard that we all had to rise to." Mayor Michelle Wu submitted a written letter of support under City Ordinance 8-11. In a separate vote, the commission approved the conveyance of a vacant Croydon Street parcel in Mattapan to Robert Moore and Shirley J. Moore for $34,000, equal to the land's appraised value, to be used as open space adjacent to the couple's existing home.
