Boston PIC Approves Six Petitions Covering Bike Lanes, Conduit, and New Bollards

BOSTON — June 27, 2024 — Boston's Public Improvement Commission approved six petitions and cleared one utility-pole withdrawal at its June 27 meeting, advancing projects across Brighton, Allston, the South End, West Roxbury, and Beacon Hill. Principal Engineer John Monticelli of the Streets Cabinet won unanimous approval for three joint Transportation-Public Works petitions covering pedestrian ramp upgrades and bike-lane infrastructure on North Beacon Street in Brighton, Winship Street in Allston, and a four-intersection reconstruction of Harrison Avenue in Boston proper that adds separated bike facilities, green stormwater infrastructure, and new traffic signals. Turtle Dreams LLC secured back-to-back unanimous votes to abandon approximately 15,200 square feet of Weymouth Avenue right-of-way in West Roxbury and extend the street roughly 380 feet to serve a planned seven-unit single-family development, with the city's Parks Department and Office of Green Infrastructure agreeing to absorb ongoing maintenance of new trees and landscaping strips. TC Systems won approval to install 250 feet of telecommunications conduit on Brookline Avenue and Newbury Street near Fenway, with crews required to avoid digging on Red Sox game days. Verizon New England withdrew its petition to install three poles in Roxbury without prejudice, citing resident concerns, while Eversource Energy's Carolina Avenue anchor-guy petition was continued to July 25 pending an accessibility-compliant redesign.
