Boston PIC Approves Ruggles Station Street and Accessibility Overhaul in Unanimous Votes

BOSTON — April 9, 2026 — Boston's Public Improvement Commission unanimously approved nine street and licensing petitions at its April 9 hearing, most tied to the MBTA's Ruggles Station renovation in Roxbury. The commission, chaired by Dick Gove, Interim Chief of Streets, approved four MBTA-led petitions covering a Ruggles Street right-of-way widening, a subsurface vertical discontinuance, a Forsyth Street extension, and specific repairs on Ruggles, Forsyth, and Columbus avenues — the last of which replaces the station's monumental stairs with an accessible ramp-and-terrace entry and installs a canopy stretching roughly 200 feet to the station lobby. A fifth vote approved the MBTA's projection license for that canopy over the Columbus Avenue sidewalk. David Wien of the Southwest Corridor Park Alliance raised detailed concerns in public comment about pedestrian and cyclist clearances along the new Columbus Avenue configuration, noting nine-foot and 11-foot gaps between the curb line and new canopy columns, and urged the Boston Transportation Department and Public Works to separately resurface and stripe the deteriorated Columbus Avenue block between the station and Melnea Cass Boulevard. The commission also approved specific-repair and projection-license petitions for Hancock Street Realty Trust in Dorchester — covering a three-story housing addition with two new red oak street trees and permeable pavers — and a sidewalk-reconstruction petition for Condor Street Investment LLC in East Boston, which includes a new crosswalk, bike racks, and street trees at 98-100 Condor Street.
